About Agra
Agra needs little introduction. The Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, is best seen early, before the crowds and the heat; the red sandstone Agra Fort stands a short drive upriver; and Mehtab Bagh, the garden across the Yamuna, gives the quietest view of the Taj at sunset. The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays. Agra pairs naturally with the temples of Mathura and Vrindavan, and with Jaipur for a longer circuit.
