Garhwal, Uttarakhand
The source of the Yamuna and the first stop of the Char Dham, reached by a short trek from Janki Chatti.
Yamunotri is the westernmost of the four dhams and where the yatra traditionally begins. From Janki Chatti, a six-kilometre trail climbs to the temple, with ponies and palanquins available. Pilgrims cook rice in the hot spring of Surya Kund and carry it home as prasad. Because the trek is the first real exertion of the yatra, we schedule it early in the day and keep the following morning light.
