Garhwal, Uttarakhand
The source shrine of the Ganga, where the Bhagirathi runs fast and cold beside a white stone temple.
Gangotri marks the origin of the Ganga in Hindu tradition, with the glacier at Gaumukh a further 18 kilometres upstream. The temple is reached by road through Uttarkashi and Harsil, one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire yatra. The valley is narrow and the air noticeably thinner, so we keep the day's driving short and allow time to simply sit by the river.
