Punjab
Home of the Golden Temple, the Sikh faith's holiest shrine, and a city of remarkable food and hospitality.
The Harmandir Sahib is the reason to come to Amritsar, and it deserves more than one visit: at dusk when the lamps come on, and again before dawn when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in. The langar, the world's largest free community kitchen, is open to everyone. Jallianwala Bagh is a few minutes' walk away, and the evening ceremony at the Wagah border is a popular half-day trip. Amritsar combines well with a Himachal or Uttarakhand itinerary by train or road.
